How Can I Be A Missionary?

I know it's been forever and a day since I wrote in this little beauty, but that doesn't mean that I don't want to. I just get caught up in life. Most people my age do. I'm almost 100% positive. Well this morning as I was going through my email I found this one email from my dad from back in April. I had forgotten all about it. As I'm laying here in bed I received a prompting to read it. Well I did. I forgot how amazing of a missionary that my dad is. Best part is, he joined the church just a year and a few months ago! I've now been a member since January 2012, but that doesn't mean that I have nothing left to learn. Every day you can learn something new. I've found that to be very true in my old age of 23. Some days I look back and remind myself how truly blessed I am. I've overcome obstacles that I never thought I could. I've been places I've always wanted to go, and I've met some of the best people that I will ever get to meet. & the best part? I'm only 23. I have so much more life to live, things to learn, and places to go. That brings me back to sharing the gospel with people. It's sometimes hard for me. What if they deny it? What if they're mean about it? My past experiences have taught me otherwise. Most people I share the restored gospel with are accepting. Back in April I had that amazing experience while at General Conference. After the afternoon session my friend Josh went on to the Priesthood session. I had met up with some of my friends and we went to Starbucks to get out of the rain. Well I started talking to the man sitting next to us and 20 minutes later I asked if he wanted to walk around temple square. If you've never been to temple square, you need to go. It's beautiful! We introduced him to the missionaries and it was amazing! By the way, If you don't know what General Conference is, it's where the Lords prophets & apostles go & counsel us on the revelation they've received throughout the year. They hold it once in April & once in October (check out Lds.org) I've always attended the April sessions and I wish that I could attend in October! I'm hoping for this October, but we will see. Art in the Park is that same weekend. & I'd also like to go up to Salt Lake and see the temple lit up for Christmas. I will move to Utah one day. I'd just like to end this post with my testimony that the church is true. The Lord has placed us all here for a purpose. Let him use us as a tool to help other and even ourselves. I leave that with you in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Now go on and read my dad's talk that I'm posting along with this little blurb and random photos from my trip to General Conference in April! I promise that you won't regret it :)

How Can I Be A Missionary

Brothers & Sisters,
Good morning - I’m honored to speak today on the subject of How Can I Be A Missionary and help in the Work Of Salvation.  The definition of Missionary is one who is sent on a mission especially one sent to do religious or charitable work in a territory or foreign country. The full-time missionarys in our ward are simply there to assist us in the missionary work.   It is the ward members responsibility in the church to actively be engaged in the work and keeping the missionary’s calendar full, by finding and befriending people to teach them the gospel. These can be Investigators, Active & Non-Active members.
By doing so members can be involved in the missionary effort. By extending invitations to friends, neighbors, co-workers, and anyone else you can think of to attend a church function. This includes all members young or old as we are all missionary’s. Members need to know our missionary’s and fellowship with them. As well the missionary’s need to know our members, so that we can work closely together in finding people to teach the gospel to.  I ask that we open our homes for lessons and teachings of the church and share the gospel with as many people as we can. Once an Investigator is found and they start taking the lessons it is so important for ward members to befriend them and make their transition smooth into the church.
I’m a perfect example of a Non-Member who had slipped through the cracks, because no one explained thoroughly the principles that needed to be followed by the church members.  Was it because of my age or that members felt that I would never follow the principals of the church. I have often pondered these questions myself - More so why a member never approached me about joining the church. If I would have known what I know today about the church I would have joined years ago. How many of you know a Leo Hernandez or someone like him that is just waiting for you to befriend. To let them see that we have the spirit of the Holy Ghost and how we live our lives in these latter days. Do they know that it will lead to sooooo many blessings? They won’t know if we don’t tell them - so don’t be afraid to ask someone to come to church or to your home. To share a Scripture watch a Mormon message, pray with them or share your Testimony and Revelations you have personally received through the Gospel.
We are all missionary’s by showing the world our beliefs and our standards. The Work Of Salvation has begun and will continue to happen. The Objective is to look for an opportunity in your own missionary work. When the day comes and you hand someone the Book Of Mormon - look them in the eyes and tell them this book will change your their life forever and that all they have to do is read it. I am  a Testimony of this as it has changed my life forever 5 months ago on March 16, 2013. If you meet an Investigator and they have questions about the Church and why I joined please have them call me. I can reassure them that they are making the best decision they will ever make in their life. You can weather any storm with your faith in the Gospel and in Missionary work.
When the soldiers that guard the Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C.  were ordered to abandon their post during Hurricane Sandy. They replied that is unacceptable and continued to stand guard during heavy rains and winds. The same is true in missionary work - do the work no matter what the storm is. May both members & missionaries ever be United and fulfilling our missionary purpose to help others come into Christ.  Your Principals mean more to you than any money or success.
Remember- Who You Are And Always What You Stand For. Matthew 7:7 Ask and it will be given to you. Knock and the Door will be opened to you. May we be alive and a Beacon to all the earth and particularly Gods children who are seeking the Lords Blessing. L Tom Perry Quorum Of The Twelve Apostles.   If you need The Book Of Mormon, LDS hand out cards, Genealogy Charts or any marketing information to use in your missionary work please ask our Missionary Sisters. I’m honored to be a member of the Church Of Jesus Christ in these Latter Days. I humbly say these things in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen

Love One Another

Easter Sunday I was invited to eat Easter dinner at my bishops house. I of course had my own family that I could spend time with, but unfortunately I had church during the times that they were getting together :( If only all of my family attended church. We'd never have that problem again! Now as we're sitting at the dinner table with my bishop, his entire family, and my relief society president, Jillian, my bishop looks at me & says, "Sydney, when was the last time you gave a talk?" Now Jillian being a good friend tried to deflect the topic, but Bishop Walton didn't give up that easily. He again asked me & I told him that I had never been asked to give a talk. It's probably because I'm usually active for a few months & then get sidetracked by silly boys. Not this time. I'm in it for the long run! I'm now going to post the talk that I wrote for sacrament meeting today. I hope that it inspires you all and I hope that the spirit will touch you as you read this talk. I put my heart and soul into it. It wasn't just something that I threw together. The spirit definitely lead me to write what I did. I hope that you enjoy my talk :)

Good afternoon my dear brothers & sisters. For all of those who don’t know me, my name is Sydney Hernandez. I’ve been asked to speak today on loving one another. I’d just like to start off my talk with 1 piece of advice. When Bishop Walton asks you the last time you spoke in sacrament was, run away. I just barely got over being nervous to pray in front of people & now here I am giving a talk in sacrament. Now I know we’re all familiar with the commandments, but one of the commandments that we often overlook is one of the most important. In John 13:34-35 it says, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.  By this shall all men know that they are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. In preparation for this talk I read at least 7 talks, & numerous scriptures. To sum up what I gathered from all of that was simple. It was the same thing my dad taught me as a little girl. Treat others the way you’d like to be treated. As a 22 year old young woman in the LDS church I’ve adapted that saying just a tiny bit. Treat people the way that Christ would treat you. He wouldn’t say hurtful things to you, he wouldn’t be mean to you, he wouldn’t make you sad. He would uplift you and love you.  We’ve all been the new person in a ward. We’ve all been on the receiving end of a bad situation. We’ve all had hard times. We’ve all felt alone. There’s absolutely no need for that when we’re all members of the same beautiful church. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Our church is built upon on a foundation of love. We’ve all been blessed with the gift to uplift and love our fellow man. At times it may be difficult to love members of your ward, your friends, certain family members, or even acquaintances, but ask yourself this question. Is there anyone that Christ doesn’t love? As Elder Holland has said before, “Now loving others as Christ would will not come without effort and it doesn’t come without patience, but, like salvation itself, in the end it is a gift, given by God to the “true followers of his Son, Jesus Christ.” I have numerous friends that are always constantly so Christ like. I look at them all of the time and think to myself, how the heck do you do it?  I’m constantly learning things from them. They’re fantastic examples. With that said we need to lead by example. We need to be the light. I read a quote the other day that said “Lighthouses don’t go running all over an island looking for boats to save; They just stand there shining. As Robert J. Whetten wrote in his talk, “True Followers” he said “How He lived His life is the example we should follow. His way should be our way. “Therefore, what manner of men ought ye to be? Verily I say unto you, even as I am.” 5 He showed us that we must go about doing good, that the spiritual and physical welfare of our fellowmen is as important as our own, and that we should show genuine concern and compassion for all of our Heavenly Father’s children. Moroni defines Christlike love as charity. “And now I know that this love which thou hast had for the children of men is charity; wherefore, except men shall have charity they cannot inherit that place which thou hast prepared in the mansions of thy Father.” 6 It’s not enough to say we believe and that we love Him; we must be found possessed with His kind of love for others at that last day. It is not necessary for us to lay down our life for others as He did, but like the Savior, we should bless the lives of others by giving of what our life is made up of—our time, our talents, our means, and ourselves. We must rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. We can apply these principles to our own ward family. We need to reach out to those who aren’t here. Reach out to those within our ward that we know are having a difficult time or need extra encouragement and love. One way to accomplish this is doing our home and visiting teaching with genuine love & finding ways to serve them. We all have our hard times and when we have those around us that love us we know it’ll be a little easier to get through. As we serve and love the members of our ward, it builds unity. As Christ said in D & C 38: 27 I say unto you be one and if ye are not one ye are not mine. As we love each other we grow in unity and strength and become united as one in Christ. I extend a challenge to all of you. I ask you to reach out to at least 2 people this week. Get to know them. Be genuinely interested in them & their lives. Build a friendship with them upon a foundation of love. It will bless your life and theirs.

Best Day Of My Life

Is it just me or have I really not blogged in 2 months? Wow! Some days I think about blogging, but then I realize that not everyone wants to hear all about my life. Maybe if I had kids I'd write more, but then I'd be that annoying mom. I already write about my dog enough, imagine if I had kids. So my life lately has been awesome. It took a lot of soul searching & time to get to where I am in my life right now, but I'm very thankful that I finally found the right path for myself. & now that I am genuinely happy I can't help, but to share it! If you follow me on twitter you probably know that. I've never been a fan of people always talking about how happy they are because I've always thought people were putting on a show, but for me personally I am so happy! I've been doing so many fun things with such great people that I literally come home almost every night & post about how amazing my night was. I've also started to go back to my own church :) In case you didn't know, I'm a Mormon. You can read all about what I believe at www.mormon.org ! Thanks to this amazing church & gospel I've come to make many new friends. Most of the people that I'm friends with now I wouldn't have ever imagined I'd be friends with. That's what the church does! It brings people together. Love that! I use to be that person to write tons of people off automatically, but I definitely learned my lesson these past 2 months. Yesterday I actually got up during our fast and testimony meeting ( it's where you go up to the stand & bear your testimony in front of everyone) & I bore my testimony! I can barely pray in front of people because I get so nervous, but I was prompted to go up there & that I did :) Thanksgiving showed me how blessed I was so I had to share that of course. Last year I spent Thanksgiving in Reno with my friends family so being down here with my entire family again was so special to me. Maybe one day I'll decide that I don't want to spend every holiday with my family, but I don't think that'll be anytime soon. So my brother's girlfriend Amanda will be moving down here this week all the way from Georgia! At first I was very skeptical because I wouldn't ever move to another state for a man I wasn't married to, but I really like Amanda so I'll let it slide this one time. Speaking of changes! I got a new job! After 4 years at JCP I made the switch! Finally! It was definitely a change to not work on Black Friday! I've also taken up piano lessons! I have always wanted to learn & I also think I'd be a lot of fun to play for my kids one day in the future. Well everyone, I have sort of run out of things to write. I have many funny stories I could share, but I think I'll keep those to myself for now! I'll share some pictures from some of the awesome times I've been having lately though :)

Material Girl

Every single night I make a deal with myself in my mind that I'll end up going to sleep at a decent time. 95% of the time that never happens. I miss the days when I was early to bed & early to rise. Although if I ever stay at someones house I'm up at the crack of dawn. I was the strange child who hated staying at other people's houses. I think it was a mix between missing my mom & not being in my own house. Plus you never knew how clean a person's house was. I have horror stories about some of my friends houses. You don't even want to know. Now back to the issue at hand. When I moved home I knew someone with bad money problems. Back in March I had barely any money saved & after finding out about how bad people struggled with their own money I changed my ways. My best friend Corey who is mentioned frequently had always told me to save my money. At least 30% of my paychecks. I'd do that from time to time, but something would always come up or I'd spend too much money & I'd pull the money from my savings. Looking back at how terribly I handled my money hurts my heart! Thankfully I've learned my lesson & I now usually save more than 30% :) I'm so proud of myself for saving my money. I leave myself 100 dollars every 2 weeks to spend after paying my bills & putting my savings away. Go me! & I now never touch my savings. I literally get chest pains when I have to take money out of my savings. My how 6 months will change ya! The reason I even brought up money is because lately I've been wanting to buy myself something nice. I already have nice clothes, nice jewelry, nice sunglasses, nice purses & tons of other nice things. I'm not a huge label girl thankfully, but I've been wanting a certain piece of jewelry since I could remember. A piece of jewelry from Tiffany & Co. I have a necklace that my dad had bought me when I was younger, but I've always wanted a bracelet. I'm not exactly sure why, but it's just something that's always been on my mind. With that being said I've been considering lately going out & buying myself something nice. My only problem is that I'm not sure what exactly it is that I want. So I've decided to post my couple of options & then see what you all think. Or maybe someone will just love me enough to buy this certain item for me :)

Tiffany & Co. Bracelet

Tiffany & Co. ring

Cute blue heart bracelet

Heart shaped Tiffany & Co. ring.

Same as the blue one, just a
different heart.

Now after seeing all of these cute things which do you like the most! I am probably the most indecisive person when it comes to everything in my life so I need help picking! Hopefully my aunt J will check this blog post out & help a sista out on a pick! She got a Louis Vuitton for her birthday. BOUGIE ;)

Well guys, I have to be up early tomorrow. I have to prepare for my little weekend road trip :) I will share more details & pictures sometime next week. Between school & work I only get 2 days to myself these days. & also please pray for my aunt Anne. I found out tonight that she's battling cancer & they're thinking she's not going to make it. She's one of the sweetest women I know, plus we share a birthday. Thank you all in advance!

Xoxo, Sydney

My friend Alex left to the air force Monday & I'm very sad. Love that guy! Everyone at work things we're secretly in love with each other & that's what the above conversation is about. I can't help, but laugh every time I read these texts. It's just like that song from Grease. As you can see I referenced it. In case you don't know the song it's title is "Summer Nights." I prefer the Glee version, but that's because I'm too much of a Glee fanatic!

Let Her Go

Things around here have been pretty great. School started and even though I'm only taking 4 classes I feel like all I ever do is read! My ethnic studies class has got to be the most interesting class I've ever encountered. I love it, but there's this kid in there that likes to get everyone mad. I swear one day he's going to get slapped by someone. I'm just waiting patiently for that to happen. Luckily I get to take a history class this semester and I am SO excited :) History was my favorite subject in middle school and high school. It may have been thanks to my favorite high school teacher Mr. Ringler. We had to write a paper about our high school history teachers & of course I had to write about the Ring! I had him my sophomore year & then I was his aide my junior year. Senior year he begged for me to be an aide again which wasn't allowed, but they made the exception. Such a cool guy! I also loved my government teacher my senior year. He was pretty attractive, plus my dad use to be his coach. Good ol' small town Henderson <3 Like I stated last week I also have a NSC stalker who just happens to be my bff Corey. I feel as if every time I walk out of a class he somehow just bumps into me. Last Wednesday I was sitting at the tables waiting on my next class to start & of course who ends up finding me...Corey! He then told me that he had seen me in my last class. He was going to text me that he liked my headband, but he didn't want to sound creepy. Saying it after the fact didn't make it any less creepy, but hilarious. Love that guy! Some of you may know that my brother just went through a divorce, I wish he wouldn't have had to go through that, but it made him happier and he's way better off now :) It's so nice having my old brother back. I missed that guy. He texted me the other night to add his new girlfriend on Instagram. Well I've always hated girls that try to be best friends with their siblings new boyfriend/ girlfriend. I refused for a little bit, but I ended up adding her. The day after I went over to his house to drop off some pictures that I had printed him & he was skyping with the new girlfriend. I'm the type of person that can tell the first time I meet you if I like you or I don't. This girl I happen to actually like. Now I know meeting in real life is way different & I'm kind of excited to meet her next week! We're all going to Disneyland together! I've not been to Disneyland in 2 years and lately I've been getting the itch to go so I just can't wait! She'll be out here for 10 days & we've already planned on getting our noses pierced together, she's getting a new tattoo, & we're having a Kardashian marathon! Plus she's bringing me a turquoise ring from Georgia :) I've been looking for one out here, but I've been having no luck unfortunately. I also got some more good news on my traveling front. My dad invited me to Reno with him because he's going to meet a friend up there & go fishing, but I'll just get to hangout with my Reno friends instead :) & I'll be up there for the Unlv, Unr game. Cannot wait! I miss Reno so much some days, but I'm happy with where I am :) Surrounded by my family, friends, I'm where I'm suppose to be. Now only if my aunt would move back here( that'll never happen, but a girl can dream!) I'm now going to go grab myself a pumpkin spice iced latte & curl up to read a little before my long day at school. After I get to go attend a fun bible session with some awesome girls! I get to break out my new bible that the amazing Kelly Hicks sent me all the way from Minnesota! :)
Have an amazing day guys! I'll update this little baby later this week!

Soundtrack to My Life

So as I mentioned in my last post this was the first week of school for me. Well and most of Nevada. This semester I'm taking 4 classes & I just happen to end up with Ethnic Studies as one of my chosen courses. I've never taken an Ethnic Studies class so I was very unsure of what to think, but Corey assured me it would be okay. Plus his good friend is the professor. I feel like I mentioned that last week, but I'll mention it again. Today was the 2nd day of class & we've already gotten our first big project. We're suppose to do a soundtrack of life. You pick 5 different topics from a list and pick a song that you think relates to that topic & your own life. So here I am at 11 o'clock at night trying to figure out what topics to choose. Who knew I'd almost find a song for every topic on this sheet? I think my love for lyrics in songs has a little something to do with that :) Thank you blogging for helping me out with this school assignment! I've decided to share the topics with you guys & the songs that I picked. Maybe you all can help me pick my 5. Along with the song we have to write a little paragraph to explain to the class as to why we chose the topic & song.

Category A (minimum of 2 choices form this list)
  • What’s a song in your library that reminds you of your family, or person in your family?  Don't Forget to Remember Me - Carrie Underwood
  • What’s a song that reminds you of your childhood? Ain't No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye.
  • What song makes you want to dance? 22- Taylor Swift.
  • What song do you love to get ready to in the morning? Total Eclipse of The Heart- Glee Cast.
  • What song makes you want to cry? For this one I picked Crazy by K-Ci and JoJo.
  • What song chills you out?! Amber- 311

Category B (minimum of 2 choices from this list)
  • What’s a song in your library that describes where you’d like the world to go? Hey World( Remote Control Version) - Michael Franti.
  • What song describes your ideals regarding love? More Than Words- Extreme. If you know me well you know this is my future wedding song. So don't steal it!
  •  What song do you associate with your dreams? Pursuit of Happiness- Kid Cudi.
  • What’s a song that talks about an issue or problem in the world that you think we don’t talk about enough? Um this one I have no clue....
  • What’s a song that offends you? This one either....
  • What’s a song in your library that defines what your gender should be like? Destiny's Child - Survivor.
  • What’s a song that makes you feel empowered? Eye of the Tiger- Survivor
  • What’s a song that you feel, “keeps you going?” Treasure- Bruno Mars
Now if you guys could give me any feedback that would be great :) I think I already have my choices picked out in my head, but I want to see what you guys think as well! It's so funny to me to see how varied my taste in music is. & this is only a few songs. I have hundreds. Picking just a few was hard.

So Long Sweet Summer

Before I even begin writing anything new I just want to say that I'm probably the worst "blogger" out there. I've started 3 posts in the last few weeks, but I seem to never finish them. Terrible I know. Looking back on the last post I posted blows my mind. Since then a few things have changed, but not everything is meant to be ya know? My last post was back in June & since then I've had a birthday & also I've gone on vacation! 22 has been a good age for me so far, plus there's a catchy Taylor Swift song about being 22! For my birthday my mom & I ventured up to Colorado. Now everyone asks why I picked Colorado. Well I have this list that I made once upon a time & Colorado was on it. Also my mom, brother, grandma, cousins, & Corey have all been there this year which made me want to go even more. I got the opportunity to go to Denver & Glenwood Springs. I was so excited to go to Denver because my brother had told me about how much he loved Denver which is stranger. My brother & I are both in love with sweet ol' Henderson so I was surprised to hear that. One thing I can say that I didn't like about Colorado was their damn airport! Las Vegas & Reno both have simple airports & DIA made me nuts. The second I stepped off of the plane I was surrounded by cowboy hats & hippies. That sentence alone explains Colorado. The day after we got in we drove to downtown Denver & we got stuck in the worst traffic! I will never complain about the traffic on the strip again. I got to do a bit of shopping before we headed over to the Rockies baseball game. Thankfully I only bought a few little things. I even got to take my first pedi cab ride in downtown Denver. Now I'm not the biggest baseball fan, but I grew up around it thanks to my dad. My dad coached baseball & softball almost my entire life so I'm use to attending games. I don't have my own team, but I favor the Dodgers because of my family & the Yankees because of Corey. The weather was beautiful & the game was a lot of fun.  After the game was over we walked out & there was a horse waiting for me! My mom's best friend had arranged for a horse drawn carriage to pick us up. It was definitely fun to ride around downtown Denver with a horse leading the way. The next day we set out early en route to Glenwood Springs. Now this place was AMAZING! I had decided that I wanted to go rafting while I was in Colorado & Mike picked Glenwood Springs & I now know why. That place is so beautiful. The second we got there we went into the Hotel Colorado & signed in for our rafting group. While we waited we got to explore a little further. Apparently the Hotel Colorado is haunted! How amazing is that! This hotel is old & definitely beautiful. Plus Teddy Roosevelt use to stay there. How amazing is that? Glenwood Springs was definitely the highlight of my trip. My friends & I may even make a trip back up that way for Spring Break! Exciting :) Another update on my life is that I've been going to church again! Not the LDS church, but I've been going with my sweet co worker Skyler. I've already made a couple of new friends. One of them is my soul twin. We have so many things in common! She even use to live on my street! Monday I start school... Seriously where has this summer gone? I've got Corey checking in on me every day to make sure that I'm in all of my classes & one of his co workers is one of my professors. I will get away with nothing this semester. Wish me luck! In honor of this upcoming school semester I've dubbed this weekend my "turnt up" weekend. My co worker Mike is always telling me to go out & get crazy so that's what I fully intend to do. Starting tomorrow night! Might as well before I become a school zombie. As a matter of fact tonight I went on a gondola ride with this guy. It was 18 dollars a person & it only lasted about 10 minutes, but hey it had to be scratched off of my bucket list. Plus we met a very nice couple from Canada. Plus something hilarious happened right before our ride! We had finally found some parking & as soon as we got into the hotel this young guy stuck his arm out & tried to touch my face! It was one of the weirdest things to ever happen to me. Having that guy in Reno lick my hand is still #1 on my list. Speaking of Reno, I was there this time last year! That makes me kind of sad, but I know it all happened for a reason. Plus now I get to go up in October with some of my friends & watch the wolf pack kill the rebels yet again. It'll be my 4th year in a row at the rivalry game.  Reno in October is beautiful! They have a real Fall. & in case you didn't know, Fall is my FAVORITE season of the year :) Now I'm going to end my little update blog post because I'm going to try to wake up at 7 tomorrow morning. I've been trying to go running with my dog in the morning & since I'm no longer a morning person I need the extra sleep. I hope you all had an amazing summer! I know that I did :) It was full of amazing friends, good times, nights I don't remember, & memories that I won't ever forget. I know you will all have a fantastic first day back to school on Monday. I will for sure let you all know how mine goes :)
